Advice for College Freshman

Freshman year can be a real eye opener for some collegians. If anyone can provide advice for college freshmen, it’s someone who has already been there and done that. Here are some quick tips to help You navigate that first year as a college freshman.

1. Take school work serious; it’s not high school anymore. Don’t stress about having to choose your major in your first year. Get pre-requisites out of the way and take classes you think would interest you and that you would enjoy at the same time.

2. To provide a life balance, participate in on-campus activities, extracurricular classes and/or intramural teams. Spend the necessary amount of time on your studies, but mix it up with outings and other activities that will stir your creative mind while providing healthy activity.

3. Freshman year in the dorms is where you will meet some of your best college friends, so choose wisely. Consider joining a study group; it’s a great way to meet people who have similar interests as yours. College is a great academic environment where great minds get together and collaborate, and social intellectual interaction is always good for the mind.

4. Watch your back; you’re not in the comfort and safety of your own home anymore. Theft of laptops is one of the most prevalent campus crimes, so keep your eye on yours at all times. Lock your door whenever you step away, even if it’s just for a few minutes. If riding a bike, register it with campus security and always use a bike lock. If you’re keeping anything more valuable in your room, consider purchasing dorm insurance.

These are just a few top tips for college freshmen; keep them in mind as you head off to start this new phase in your life and never be afraid to ask for advice.

  1. Great post, and I love how you encourage students to ask for advice. Far too many of my students have had negative experiences because they didn't know how to do something and they didn't ask for help.

    Thanks for sharing,
